- By the 130th anniversary of the artist
Pyotr Konchalovsky for his long life he made more than five thousand works, so each of his solo exhibitions could accommodate only a very small fraction of what they were created over sixty years of creative work. He painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes, genre paintings. Posted in full force, clearly, loudly, with his usual artistry. Its extraordinary fertility, greed to have been caused by the desire to work as soon as possible to implement an inclusive and diverse in color richness of the world. Perhaps, it is unlikely in his biography to have at least one day without painting. “The greatest and most valuable in the work of art is its design. Miss the time for implementation of plan – it is to lose everything. Missed this point – do not work, or it will fail, chilled. Some people think that I am in a hurry to work at all and I write too much to the detriment of himself. This is incorrect. I write a lot, simply because I always have a lot of artistic ideas, because they are born continuously and require implementation, and also because anything else is not busy, but paint. “
Konchalovsky turned to painting all he meets along the way, creating numerous paintings and graphic works. His outstanding literary works makes this artist truly inexhaustible – because each show reveals only a small part of his artistic genius, only one of the many facets of his talent. World of artistic images created Konchalovsky – is mostly a happy outlook on life, the world of being, the world of objects around the person. His understanding of modernity lay in the field of paints. Large and multi-faceted hues was his palette, the color he expressed his understanding of beauty. Passionate, ardent art Konchalovsky – is immense love for life, for her boundless colorful diversity.
This exhibition – this attempt to reveal unknown masterpieces belonging to different periods of his work.
Pyotr Konchalovsky was born in Slavyansk Kharkov province. Konchalovsky family moved to Moscow in 1889, and thanks to the literary and publishing his father’s young Peter once ranked among the Moscow art world 90s. In their home were often V. Surikov, Serov, Konstantin Korovin, Mikhail Vrubel. It is in this environment for the first time the boy was inclined to artistic activity. Even in my school years, Pyotr Konchalovsky attended evening drawing classes at the Stroganov School.
In the years 1896-1898 Konchalovsky studied in Paris at the Academy R. Julien. His instructors were Academician J.-J. Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. When he returned in 1899 to his homeland, he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, which ends in 1907. Learns from B. Savinskoye, KGSalemann and P. Kovalevsky. Since 1909, Peter begins to actively participate in regular “Golden Fleece”, “New Society of Artists”, “partnership”, “World of Art” and “Jack of Diamonds” (one of the founders of the latter was himself). Since 1918, Konchalovsky began his teaching career, and in 1922 he had his first solo exhibition at the State Tretyakov Gallery.
Throughout his life, he traveled Konchalovsky, seeking a new nature, and constantly expand their knowledge in the art of getting acquainted with the work of the best contemporary artists and classics. He visited Italy, Spain, France, over and over visited Novgorod, in the Caucasus, in the Crimea, in the north of Russia. In his early work, he was greatly influenced by the famous French contemporaries – Cezanne, Van Gogh, Matisse. It dragged them new methods of searching and bold painting techniques. Having imbibed the entire complex mixture of French artistic culture of those years, Konchalovsky created his own colorful and distinctive style of art, which is not all then accepted in Russia, and after the revolution, is often interpreted as “Cézanne”. However, according to the memoirs of the painter, the French themselves understood “Slavic” nature of my painting, which had a reputation then in Moscow to France. Otherwise, of course, could not be. Of course, I could be “French” only with Moscow’s point of view. I understood this to the French because the French working methods of painting, but it always remains for them a Slav and even “barbarian” in color, as they wrote the French critics. “
This need to find new forms, new pictorial solutions led Konchalovsky and his associates by the establishment of “The Jack of Diamonds”, which was initially created to solve artistic problems and devoid of ideology deliberately shocking the bourgeoisie, which came later, with the split of the association. In general, all his life was wholly devoted Konchalovsky painting and stayed away from the dramatic political events of our time, which allowed him to retain creative and productive activity to continue in the Soviet era.
Konchalovsky worked from nature. But nature he never considered as a frozen, unchanging form. Every time he passed his understanding, his vision of nature. “When I see a piece of nature interest me, I can see the whole thing is, I see and feel the need to” fix “the landscape. Just take what you see, to act as a photographer, I could never, without the construction of no art, and there are naked naturalism, which I think is a sworn enemy of art, the most contagious disease. In the primary perception of nature inevitably includes my thoughts on the picturesque impression which should give a real landscape. At that exact moment and the process of overcoming the fact, awareness of the random, disturbing, is that the concentration of the visible, which forms the basis of art. At the same time clarified the basic combination of tones of color is determined by the leading note and the accompanying melody. “The exhibition will be well represented landscape painting in different years – from the early postimpressionisticheskih of Cassis, Italian landscapes and Novgorod 20s to mature works of the master of 40th-50th ies.
Besides the magnificent scenery, an important place in the artist took the genre of still life. Konchalovsky in his life wrote a countless number of still lifes, though a variety of topics, with the selection of different subjects, composition differently constructed, able to stand next to any of the masterpieces of Western art, and does not lose the quality and artistic expression. His still life with berries, fruit, vegetables, poultry, flowers, full of vivid, bright colors and express the joy of life.
Over the years, more attention is paid Konchalovsky portrait genre, each of which is a landmark milestone in the work of the artist. Particularly noteworthy are the author’s late 30’s and 40’s, performed in a realistic manner, when he produced a string of superb portraits of his contemporaries. Thus, as a rule, Konchalovsky worked on complex composite portraits, often in growth, with a widely used landscape or interior background. These portraits continue and develop the tradition of Russian art, echoing the works of the classics, and, at the same time maintain the spirit of his time in the images of people, full of inner significance.
The exhibition in the gallery “House Nashokin” will be well represented in the work of the three main genres that created Pyotr Konchalovsky – landscape, still life and portrait. Many of the works have not been exhibited. This exhibition is a great continuation of the tradition of our gallery to open new page in the works of classical Russian artists whose works have become paradigmatic. We have already introduced the visitors to the little-known works of Zinaida Serebryakova and Valentin Serov. This time, the exhibition will include the original masterpieces by Peter Konchalovsky of museum collections and private collections, the artist, whose works together two times – the pre-revolutionary and Soviet Russia.
